Thirteen <Coiled Serpent> (2008), Limestone, 17"x 16" x 7.5"

This sculpture is a replica of an Aztec stone carving, Coiled Serpent, from Tlalpan, Mexico, 1400 -1521. The Aztec sculpture is carved out of porphyry and is in Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection, Washington, D.C.

"The complex scales on the underside of the serpent came as a surprise compared with the simple upper half. Undersides were sometimes carefully carved because the design was believed to be in communication with the earth it rested on." - Esther Pasztory, Pre-Columbian Art

Yuli's coiled sperpent, Thirteen, is named after 13 rattles that serpent has. Don't they look phallic to you?
